Giclee is derived from the French word la glicée which means spurt, squirt or jet. When it first appeared on the market, this type of printing was reserved to create digitally printed reproductions of paintings, drawings or photographs. Now, one can create a giclee print entirely in a digital space on a computer or Smartphone through programs like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
To create a giclee print, it needs to live at a resolution of 300 dots per inch (DPI). This means that the camera used to take the photo or the digital program used needs to have at least 300 DPI in order for the print to come out properly. If the DPI falls under 300, there is a good chance the finished product will lack sharpness and fragmentation. Besides the DPI, the type of ink and printer used are important to giclee canvas prints. To ensure that your giclee prints come out properly, you need to use a pigment-based ink. Pigment-based inks are able to produce more sophisticated hues and have a lifespan of at least 100 years before they experience fading. The printer needed for giclee canvas prints must be able to run on pigment-based inks and be able to hold 8-12 different colour ink cartridges.
Giclee printing is usually done by professional print shops. You can give them a photo you’d like recreated or they can create one for you digitally. One of the major benefits of giclee printing (besides its 100-year lifespan) is that a professional print shop can create a giclee canvas print on demand by using digital means.
Giclee canvas prints provide options to recreate existing photos or create new ones digitally on the spot. These prints are vibrant, detailed and incredibly sharp, perfect for hanging on your walls.
